FFA Chapter and Greenhand Degrees

The Future Farmers of America (FFA) is a national youth organization that aims to develop leadership skills, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. Within the FFA, members work towards various degrees that acknowledge their accomplishments and progress in the organization. Two of the key milestones in an FFA member’s journey are the FFA Chapter Degree and the Greenhand Degree. These degrees serve as important markers of achievement and demonstrate the member's dedication to both personal and professional growth.

Greenhand Degree

The Greenhand Degree is the first degree awarded to a new member in the FFA. This degree represents a member’s entry into the FFA, showing their commitment to the organization and interest in agriculture. To earn the Greenhand Degree, members must meet specific criteria, including:

  • Be enrolled in an agricultural education program.
  • Be in the 9th grade or higher.
  • Learn and explain the FFA Creed, motto, and mission statement.
  • Participate in FFA chapter activities and events.
  • Have knowledge of FFA history and symbols.

The Greenhand Degree is an important step for members, as it marks the beginning of their journey into the world of agriculture and leadership. It provides them with opportunities to develop skills, build confidence, and engage in community activities.

FFA Chapter Degree

The FFA Chapter Degree is awarded to members who have progressed beyond the Greenhand Degree and have demonstrated more involvement and accomplishment in their agricultural education. To earn the Chapter Degree, members must meet additional requirements, such as:

  • Active membership in the FFA for a specified period.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills through involvement in chapter activities, including attending meetings and events.
  • Have a plan and progress in a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program.
  • Complete a specified number of hours of agricultural instruction.

This degree recognizes the member’s growing commitment to the FFA and their role in the chapter. It signifies that the member is dedicated to further developing their skills and pursuing a career in agriculture.

Application Process

To apply for the Greenhand and Chapter Degrees, members typically need to submit an application that outlines their accomplishments, involvement in FFA activities, and their agricultural education journey. The application serves as a way for members to document their progress and showcase their achievements to their local FFA chapter.

The application process may include the following steps:

  1. Gathering Required Information: Members need to provide information about their SAE projects, leadership roles, and participation in chapter activities.
  2. Completing the Application Form: The application will require members to fill out specific forms provided by the FFA chapter or state association. These forms include sections on personal information, FFA involvement, and goals.
  3. Submit the Application: After completing the application, members will submit it to their local FFA advisor or chapter officers for review.
  4. Review and Selection: The local chapter will review the applications and determine who meets the qualifications for the Greenhand or Chapter Degree.
